Henry Jay Dykhuis' Obituary
Racine-Henry Jay Dykhuis, 102, passed away peacefully at Ascension All Saints in Racine on Friday, October 4, 2024, with his beloved family by his side.
Henry was born on July 14, 1922, in Muskegon, Michigan, to the late John and Laura (nee LaValley) Dykhuis. A proud patriot, he served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard for three years during World War II. During his service, the Coast Guard sent him to electrician school, setting the foundation for a lifelong career in the electrical field.
After the war, Henry began his career at Western Publishing in 1945 as an electrician. His hard work and dedication saw him promoted to the management team, where he continued to make significant contributions until his retirement in 1984. Henry was also the first serviceman to earn an electrician’s license in Wisconsin, a distinction he was proud to hold.
Henry was united in marriage to the love of his life, LaVerne Beth, on June 27, 1942, at First Church of God in Racine. Together, they built a strong and faith-filled life, centered on their love for each other and their devotion to God. LaVerne preceded Henry in death on July 22, 2016.
A dedicated member of First Church of God for 68 years, Henry played an integral role in the church’s growth, from helping build the electrical units to serving on the church council and singing in the choir. His unwavering faith guided him through every season of life, and he joyfully served the Lord by donating his time and talents to help others in need.
One of the highlights of Henry’s later years was the experience of the Honor Flight, where he was recognized for his service to his country. His love for his family, church, and community defined his life, and he will be remembered for his steadfast devotion, kind spirit, and generous heart.
Henry will be deeply missed by his children: Sharon Behling, Gary (Jackie) Dykhuis, and Marvin (Rebekah) Dykhuis; grandchildren: Susan (Don), David (Kim), Jeremy, and Joshua (Nell), Danielle (Craig), and David; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; along with many other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, Henry was preceded in death by his sisters: Laurabelle and Gertrude.
A celebration of Henry’s life will be held at the Wilson Funeral Home on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at 11:00 AM. with Pastor Stanley Hunter II from First Church of God officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Committal services with full military honors will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Memorials in Henry’s name may be directed to First Church of God (1650 Lathrop Ave, Racine, WI 53405).
