Here in Ireland, an ever-aspiring writer thinks back and wonders at the sources of inspiration. The name Alan Shucard, forever associated with the love of life and worlds and the empathy that comes from reading beautiful literature. He introduced connected thousands to imagined lives, Leaves of Grass, Warm River, Huckleberry Finn (I'll always remember my grandfather's southern Illinois Huck Finn accent and Alan's Brooklyn version.) I'm sorry for your loss. If it helps, know that he is remembered fondly by many of those whose lives he changed.

Alan was a cherished member of Milwaukee Friends Meeting (Quakers) for many years. He possessed an urbane wit combined with a quiet kindness, both of which enriched our time in worship as well as the fellowship that followed. His Light was and will continue to be a part of our community for a long time to come.

Alan was senior faculty when I first started teaching at UW-Parkside, and a valued colleague for several decades. He quietly helped in all sorts of ways, but most especially when I first became department chair in the 1980s. He was equally as good about reminding me and others to attend to life outside academia: when he heard I was going to Madison for an event, he stopped by my office and said "Ella's Deli". I had no idea what it was, but he said I had to stop there on the way into the city for a meal. I did, and it became a family tradition every time we went through the city after that. He certainly will be missed.

I was sorry to have missed the celebration of Alan's life, though I was fortunate to share much of it as a colleague at UW-Parkside. He was ever a gentleman whose wit was warmed by kindness. Alan would often stop to give me a lift when I was still riding the bus to campus. I have fond memories of our commuter conversations. My condolences to his family and many friends.

One word always comes to mind when thinking of Alan, and that is "kind." During my undergraduate years at Parkside as an English major, he guided me gently and was patient with my youthful stupidities and my immature interpretations. Yet I always felt respected, and his courses deepened my love of American literature, especially poets like Whitman and Dickinson. He pushed me to be a better thinker, and his regular struggles with back issues incited my sympathy. After I graduated and missed the intellectual rigor of classes, he encouraged me to pursue further education and helped get me into graduate school, leading ultimately to a Ph.D. Without him, I would have been adrift, and I am deeply saddened by his passing. He was a true gentleman-scholar, and the world is a lesser place without his presence.

Professor Shucard was chair of the English Department when I attended UW-P. I remember him to this day as the kindest and most helpful instructor to his students. One of my favorite classes was taught by Professor Shucard, and I remember it often as I dig deeper into a book. There still is magic in holding the printed word in your hands, and he helped me to discover that for which I will ever be thankful! God bless. Susan

Alan was a dear friend who was instrumental in my development as a person, a professor, and an academic leader. He went out of the way to buck me up when he sensed I needed it. He showed me how a truly persuasive letter of recommendation read. He approached me in 1976 to ask me to head UW-Parkside's Center for Teaching Excellence, and my life changed forever. He took over my classes when I had to be away because of my father's death. He modeled the kind of collegial leadership that I found so compelling at our university, and that became hard to find when I went elsewhere. One cold winter evening I was invited to dinner by the Shucards, I had a terrible cold. To this day I regret being such a pathetic dinner guest to such terrific people. Alan was, as you all know, a sensitive and enlightening poet who lived a full life in and out of the academy. How many of you know that he played basketball for St. Andrews University in Scotland, or that he was part of a military unit running the blockade to Berlin? He and Maureen are missed!
