Wesley George Slater's Obituary
Wesley George Slater, 79, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 7, 2016 with his loving family by his side.
He was born in Racine on January 31, 1937 to the late Francis “Dutch” and Esther “Marie” (nee: Haigh) Slater. Wesley proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp from 1954 – 1957. On October 18, 1958, he married Thelma Jean Daniels and they spent over 57 wonderful years together.
Wesley worked at Jacobson Manufacturing for 37 years retiring in 1999.
Wesley was very athletic and played fast pitch softball. He was a very accomplished 3rd baseman and also enjoyed fishing, bowling and golfing. Wesley refused to ride in a golf cart and, whenever possible, would walk the course. He was an avid Brewer and Packer fan and supported his teams with Wisconsin pride. Every Friday night you would find Wes and Thelma at Cliff’s for a fish fry. He will be remembered as a kind man, helping out grateful neighbors with snow shoveling and grass cutting. Wes was happiest when doing things for others. He loved his family and grandkids. He was extremely proud of his family, and he was there to support them in everything in which they were involved.
Wesley is survived by his wife, Thelma Slater; son, Jeff Slater (daughters: Katie, Jenni, Gabi, and Alli Slater), daughter Tracy Slater (son, Chris Slater), and daughter, Sue Slater; sisters: Donna Nelson and Dorothy (Bob) Jensen; and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Wesley was preceded in death by his father, Francis “Dutch” Slater; mother, Esther “Marie” Slater; step-mother, Ruby Slater; and brother-in-law, James “Joe” Nelson.
A celebration of Wesley’s life will be held at Wilson Funeral Home on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. with full military honors. A visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will be held at West Lawn Memorial Park at a later date.
