Lorraine Frances (Hart) Goepel
RACINE - Lorraine was born at home in Racine 100 years and 6 months ago on September 8th 1914. She was delivered by Dr. Meachem who had arrived the previous evening and slept on the couch until the new baby was ready for her debut the next morning. She passed on March 31, 2015.
She was a member of the first freshman class at Horlick High and graduated just in time for the Great Depression.
Her father Clarence was an Army veteran who served during the Spanish-American War. Her mother Frances (Clune) Hart died when she was just 19 years old. She was also preceded in death by her brother Clarence Hart, her sister Eileen Evans and an infant brother John Gordon Hart who died within weeks of his birth.
In 1939 she married Edward Goepel whom she met at the Wisconsin Racket Club on Spring Street. Edward passed in 1978.
Edward and Lorraine moved their family to Monroe Avenue in 1951 where they lived the remainder of their lives. The family were members of St. Edward’s Catholic Church since the 1950’s and Lorraine was a member of the Catholic Women's Club of Racine. Donations to St. Edward’s may be made in lieu of flowers.
Surviving children include Mary (William) Shukle of Summerfield, Florida, Thomas (Judy) Goepel of New Brighton, Minnesota, John Goepel & Robert Goepel both of Racine.
Lorraine is also survived by granddaughters Annemarie (Leslie) Kaiser of Milwaukee, Barbara Ress and fiancé Mark Myers of Citrus Hills, Florida, Julie (Doug) Wagner, a great-grandson Isaac and new great-granddaughter Isla Jean of Eagle, Wisconsin, Lindsay Elsner and great-granddaughter Keeley Ruegsegger of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Tracy (Michael) Gluchman of Chicago, Illinois, niece Mary (Thomas) Hegeman of Burlington, Wisconsin and nephew Thomas (Deborah) Northey of Fresno, California.
A funeral service will be held at St. Edward Catholic Parish at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 6, 2015. Relatives and friends may visit with the family from 10:30 AM until the time of the service. Father Richard Molter will officiate. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. Edwards Catholic Parish.
