Henry "Hank" Albert Mevis' Obituary
Eagle River, formerly Racine- Mr. Henry A. Mevis, 66, passed away on December 31, 2012.
Henry was born in Racine on October 20, 1946 to the late Cadwell Sr. and Julia (nee: Kornides) Mevis He proudly served his country as a Marine during Viet Nam(1964-1969). After he was honorably discharged, he returned to Racine and was employed with the former Continental Can Company (later the U.S. Can Co.) for over 29 years. While he was employed, he was very active as a Shop Steward and as a Shop Chairman of the Bargaining Committee. He also served 7 years as President of Belle City Lodge 437 International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers, 2 years as President of Racine County Labor Council AFL-CIO, and 11 years as a Business Representative for the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers District No. 10, where he retired in 2006. He also earned many awards for his involvement, including AFL-CIO Community Service Award of Honor in 1991 and Labor Person of the Year in 1993.
Henry was also a lifetime member of Vietnam Veterans of America, a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #0114, a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Belle City #9, and a member of the Fox Valley Marine Corps League. He also enjoyed short wave radio and electronics, and was an Amateur Radio Technician Class Operator N9ZEU. Henry also enjoyed fishing in his spare time.
Hank was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle who will be dearly missed by his children, Michelle (Gregory A.) Voss and Scott Mevis; grandchildren, Jeremy (Allison) Dickman, Chelsea Voss, and Hailey (Evan) Brunn; great-grandchildren, William and Brady Dickman; brother, Leo Mevis Sr., sister, Kathleen Mevis; sister-in-law, Elaine Mevis and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Henry will be at Wilson Funeral Home on Monday, January 7, 2013 from 4:00-7:00pm. A memorial service with full Military Honors will take place at the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 11:00am.
