Helene H.'s Obituary
Mt. Pleasant - Helene H. Hay, 95, passed away on Sept. 25, 2013 at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare Center.
Helene was born in Wild Rose, Iowa on February 23, 1918 to the late Reverend Gottholt and Laura Gerlach. Helene was united in marriage to Dr. James Alan Hay on June 24, 1942. James preceded her in death in 2002. She was also preceded in death by her son, William J. Hay.
Helene completed training as a Registered Nurse at Milwaukee County Hospital in the late 1930's and worked as an RN during World War II until she began raising a family. She enjoyed her role as a homemaker and was a wonderful cook and baker, carrying on many German family traditions from her childhood as the daughter of a Lutheran Minister in rural Iowa during the Great Depression. She was a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church. One of her great passions in life was playing card games of any type. Bridge was her favorite and she continued to participate in several bridge-clubs into her 90's.
Helene is survived by her son, Dr. Alan J. Hay and his wife, Marian Hay and son, John J. Hay. She is also survived by six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside memorial service will held at West Lawn Memorial Park Chapel on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at 11:00 am. Inurnment will follow.
