Hazel Jean Tabar's Obituary
Hazel Jean Tabar (née Bowyer), age 97, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2026, in Racine, Wisconsin. Born on February 28, 1929, Hazel lived a remarkable life filled with love, music, and cherished memories.
Hazel was a devoted mother to three children and was always available to her children except when the Packers were on television. She was always quick to defend her children's point of view no matter what situation they found themselves in. She had talent to stretch a dollar, make you laugh, and always wanted to know, “what’s the plan?”.
Hazel grew up on her family’s farm in Elkhorn alongside her parents, Ella and Charles Bowyer, and her sister Betty. From an early age, she developed a deep love for music that would remain a cornerstone of her life. She sang with the Racine Sweet Adeline Chorus for over 50 years and held numerous executive positions within the National Sweet Adeline Organization. Through her passion for singing, Hazel formed lifelong friendships and brought joy to countless people.
Professionally, Hazel dedicated 25 years to Robert W. Baird as both a secretary and office manager. Her hard work and dedication were evident throughout her career until her retirement in 1994. In retirement, she embraced life fully—traveling with friends, volunteering at St. Mary's Hospital, visiting casinos, and spending precious time with her family. She especially treasured moments with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Hazel was known for her warm heart, love of sports, and sweet tooth. She delighted in baking fresh treats for any occasion—a gesture deeply appreciated by those lucky enough to enjoy them. She was glued to the tv every Sunday watching the Packers and loved watching the Brewers play as well. Her impeccable sense of style was another hallmark of her personality; she was always one of the best-dressed women around. Even as she celebrated her 97th birthday surrounded by family just weeks before her passing, Hazel’s nails were perfectly manicured and her hair freshly permed—a testament to the grace and elegance she carried throughout her life.
Hazel is survived by her beloved sister Betty Wuttke, daughter Diane McCuaig (Scott), son John Tabar (Paula), son-in-law Gary DeCheck, grandchildren Gavin DeCheck (Jaime), Carrie Dingman (Jason), Nick Tabar (Sarah), Ella Steigenberger (Christopher), Teresa Tabar, and Jack Tabar; and great-grandchildren Gavin & Gianna DeCheck; Lilly, Harper, and Cameron Dingman.
Hazel was preceded in death by her daughter Karen DeCheck and grandson Ryan McCuaig.
Hazel’s legacy is one of love, music, kindness, and an enduring zest for life. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
