George Halonen's Obituary
Mr. Halonen, 81, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare/All Saints. He was born in Rock, MI on Aug. 17, 1926 to the late George and Lempi (nee: Erickson) Halonen. He graduated from Rock Michigan High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II. In Chicago at Holy Name Cathedral on July 21, 1951, he was united in marriage to the former Virginia H. Sroka.
He was a film technician for motion pictures with Coronet films Chicago, American National League of Professional Baseball, Chicago and George Colburn Labs, Chicago. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, Society of Motion Picture (SMPTE) and Television Engineers. He was on the Board of Directors of the Geographic Society of Chicago and past section Chairman of SMPTE.
He is survived by his wife; Virginia H. Halonen of Racine, five sons; Robert (Kathleen), Mark, John (Virginia), Matthew (Eileen), Thomas (Laura), seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one sister; Elsie (John) Schemmer, close friend, Delbert Seppanen, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends also survive. A brother, Andrew and a grandson, Michael, preceded him in death.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, May 10, 2008 at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 3126 - 95th St. Sturtevant, at 10 a.m. with Fr. Mark Molling officiating. Friends may call at the Wilson Funeral Home 1212 Lathrop Ave., on Friday, May 9, 2008 from 5-9 p.m. and also at the church on Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery 21731 Spring St. Union Grove on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at 10 a.m. with full military honors.
