Duane David Varley's Obituary
Racine – Duane David Varley, 71, passed away at his residence in Racine on June 27, 2025.
Born on May 31, 1954, to James Robert Jr. and Lois Arlene (née Peterson) Varley, Duane was a lifelong Racine resident. He graduated from J.I. Case High School in 1972 and soon after answered the call to serve his country in the United States Navy. Duane served honorably from November 3, 1972, to August 14, 1974.
Duane had a deep love for engines and often tinkered with cars or followed the roar of engines at Road America in Elkhart Lake or the Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove. He found joy in things that ran fast and loud—radio-controlled hot rods, soap box derby racing in his youth, and later, his Kawasaki 900 motorcycle. Rock music was a constant companion, and he even dabbled in brewing his own beer.
In previous years, Duane attended First Baptist Church when the congregation gathered downtown.
He is lovingly remembered by his mother, Lois Varley; his sisters, Karen (Patrick) Wirtz and Jacqueline (Dennis) Breeden; and by many nieces, nephews, extended family, and a few close friends who appreciated him just as he was.
Duane was preceded in death by his father, James Robert Varley Jr.; his brother, James Robert Varley III; and his sister, Kay Lee Varley Weber.
Full military honors will be held for Duane at 11:00 a.m. on July 18, 2025, at the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Ann Wirtz, whose steady presence and kindness meant a great deal to Duane and his family.
