Donald G. Hetland, age 100, passed away on Monday, December 15, 2025, in Union Grove, Wisconsin.
Donald was born in Salem, Wisconsin, to the late Adolph and Farrol (née Smith) Hetland. On July 5, 1947, he married the love of his life, Irene Hetland (née Thrasher) in Racine. Together they shared 64 wonderful years of marriage, building a life rooted in love, faith, and devotion until Irene’s passing on September 1, 2011. Donald remained a dedicated and loving husband throughout his life.
Donald proudly served his country in the United States Army from November 18, 1943, to April 27, 1946, during World War II. His service was a great source of pride, and he was rarely seen without his beloved World War II veteran hat. One of the highlights of his later years was participating in an Honor Flight, an experience he deeply cherished.
A man who truly enjoyed life, Donald loved hunting and fishing and being outdoors whenever the weather allowed. He was known for his friendly nature, love of conversation, and ability to tell a good joke. He took special pride in caring for his roses and was a loyal fan of the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers.
Donald was well traveled, visiting many places throughout the world, including France, Germany, Czechoslovakia, the Philippines, and Japan. Music was another important part of his life. He sang tenor in a quartet, primarily through his church, and had a deep love for gospel music. His favorite song was “Jesus Is the Sweetest Name I Know,” a reflection of his strong faith.
Donald G. Hetland will be remembered for his patriotism, kindness, humor, devotion to family, and love of faith and music. His legacy of service, love, and joy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
