David Victor Winnen's Obituary
Racine – David Victor Winnen, 73, passed away after a short battle with ALS on July 20, 2015.
David was born in Milwaukee to Victor and Josephine (Nee: Podlucky) Winnen on June 2, 1942. He was united in marriage to Kathryn Petersen on December 3, 1966.
David served in the United States Army as an instructor for Pershing missiles. He earned a degree from the Racine-Kenosha Teachers College, and later an Associate Degree from MSOE for tool and die making.
He was employed at Johnsons Wax, retiring after 40 years. After his retirement he continued his education, studying computer programming and working in the computer lab at Gateway Technical College.
David volunteered and was active in many community organizations including: The Greater Racine Kennel Club, the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP), the Wisconsin Sportsman’s Association (as a Range Officer), and the Racine Lighthouse Run. David had a great passion for gardening, computers, hunting, NASCAR, Ham Radio, and soccer (as a referee and coach). He also enjoyed taking many trips to Disney World.
David will be deeply missed by his wife, Kathryn; daughter, Susan; son, Mark (Alicia); grandson, Benjamin; father, Victor; sister, Charlotte; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Josephine.
A Celebration of David’s life will be held at the Wilson Funeral Home on Friday afternoon, July 24, 2015 at 3:00 PM with Rev. Holly Anderle officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family from 1:00 PM until the time of service. A committal service with full military honors will be held at Graceland Cemetery on Saturday morning, July 25, 2015 at 10:00 AM. Please meet at the entrance of the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, David requested memorial donations be directed to the ALS Association for future research (www.ALSA.org), or to the Racine County Food Bank. A bin will be available at the service for non-perishable food donations. Condolences may be made at www.wilsonfuneralhomeracine.com.
