Anthony "Tony" W. Mattson's Obituary
Anthony “Tony” W. Mattson, age 79, passed away on December 12, 2025, in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Tony was born on October 31, 1946, in Hudson, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater where he graduated with a degree in Accounting and met the love of his life, Kathleen Mattson (née Ontko). Tony and Kathleen were married on June 6, 1970, and together, they shared 55 wonderful years of marriage together. Tony began his career working as an accountant for various businesses before becoming self-employed and founding Mattson & Associates. He proudly operated his business until retiring in 2023.
Outside of work, Tony enjoyed taking trips up North, spending time fishing, golfing, taking pontoon cocktail cruises, and relaxing with appetizers and listening to music on the deck with family. He was a fan of the Packers, Brewers, Badgers, and the Whitewater Warhawks. When he was not watching sports, he enjoyed Hallmark movies, and it is very likely he had seen just about every one ever made.
In 1984, Tony took on the challenge of managing and revitalizing Elmwood Plaza, guiding it over several years into a thriving destination for businesses and the community. He also assumed management of the former Western Publishing building, where his leadership and support helped many new businesses get their start and succeed.
When his sons were younger, Tony devoted many years to coaching their teams, sharing his time and guidance through basketball, softball, and baseball.
Tony was deeply committed to serving his community and generously volunteered his time with several organizations in the Racine area, including Kiwanis, Elks, and Moose. Through these organizations, he held various leadership roles and worked to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Above all else, Tony’s family meant everything to him. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a loving grandfather. Tony will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Tony is survived by his beloved wife, Kathleen Mattson; his sons, Patrick (Courtney) Mattson and Michael (Monica) Mattson; his grandchildren, Jacob and Joseph; his brothers-in-law, Patrick Ontko (Irene), Gerald (Patricia) Ontko, and Gary Pape; his best friend, Tom O’Brien; as well as nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother; his sister-in-law, Maureen Pape; and his mother-in-law, Patricia Ontko, with whom he shared many Manhattans.
The family wishes to offer a special thank you to the staff at Brookside, and especially to Loretta, for the kindness and compassion shown in caring for Tony. Tony’s legacy of love, loyalty, and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, January 2, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home, 1212 Lathrop Ave., Racine, WI 53405.
